Are You Ready to Take Back Control?

Some obsessions can be harder to break than others. Perhaps you are constantly worried that you forgot to turn the oven off and find yourself continuously checking it. You may have even found yourself doubting if you hurt or angered a loved one. Because of that, you feel the need to text them for reassurance throughout the entire day.

Regardless of the form your fears, disgusts, discomforts, and anxieties appear to take; these struggles can have a devastating impact on anybody’s life.

If you feel your obsessions and compulsions are ruling your life, it may be time to seek the help of a mental health professional.

What Does Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Look Like?

OCD can look different for everybody. While one person may find themselves fearful of burning their house down, another may be disgusted by the germ potential around them, and another might feel an intense need to follow the rules of their religion to a tee.

Regardless of the significant differences in each OCD case, most cases of OCD can be characterized by both obsessions and compulsions.

Obsessions

The obsessive components of OCD include intrusive, repeated thoughts, internal images, and urges that cause one to feel anxious or fearful.

Compulsions

Compulsions, on the other hand, are the repetitive behaviors a person experiencing OCD does in response to their obsessive thoughts. Some examples of compulsive behaviors can include actions like repetitive praying and rigid religious practices, excessive taboo thoughts, ritualistic organizing and adjusting things to look a certain way, and many more.

While anybody can experience intrusive thoughts from time to time, a person experiencing OCD will tend to:

  • Feel as though they have no control over these thoughts and behaviors
  • Spend one hour or more per day with these thoughts and behaviors
  • Experience a brief feeling of relief from their anxiety but no joy or pleasure when acting on their thoughts and behaviors
  • Struggle to enjoy their life due to these thoughts and behaviors

Do I Have to Live Like This?

When your OCD begins to negatively impact your quality of life, it can feel like there is no ending in sight. Fortunately, OCD has been shown to be a treatable mental health disorder, meaning that you do not have to suffer in silence. There is still hope for a happy, healthy life.

To find that hope, you must first find a willingness to let go of the stigma we have all learned to place around mental health. The success of your treatment depends on your willingness to be open, honest, and courageous. OCD, just like every other health concern, is nothing to be ashamed of. With the help of a mental health professional, you can live the happy, healthy life you deserve.

Partnering with a clinician, you must be prepared to open up about the fears, thoughts, and obsessions that are affecting your ability to enjoy your life. This won’t always be easy. Your clinician will partner with you to do things that may leave you feeling anxious and uncomfortable, like allowing yourself to check the oven only once per day and leave it at that.

That hard work and discomfort will all be worth it in the end, though. As you find your anxiety subsiding, your obsessions fading, and your compulsions left in the dust, you will finally be able to begin enjoying your life again.

While therapy can play a significant role in finding healing from OCD, it is also crucial to note that medication and support from your loved ones may also be necessary for your personal journey. No matter what path you need to take in order to find relief from your OCD, the most important thing is that it is possible. Don’t give up hope that you can live a happy, healthy life.
